Seven Hebrew Words For Praise

BARAK

To kneel, bless, to salute, praise. Judges 5:2; Ps. 72:12-15 The only word for praise that infers some kind of silence as Barak speaks of quietness and reverence before God (see Judges 5:2) Blessing God as an act of adoration as a result of God blessing man.

 

YADAH

Root meaning is to throw out the hand. Implies the lifted hands. Thankful expression of praise. Yadah implies action and not passivity...heart praise with the outward sign of the lifted hands. II Chr. 20:21; Ps. 228:7; 43:4; 111: 1; 138: 1; Ps. 9:1

 

TOWDAH

Thanks and praise for what God is going to do. SACRIFICE of praise. Lifted hand also implied here. Ps. 50:23; 69:30; 107:22: Is. 51:3 This is faith praise in action; God sees us accepting His word without question.~OT sacrifice was without blemish Hebrews 13:15 and 16 says we are to offer to God a sacrifice of praise continually.

 

ZAMAR

An instrumental and sung praise. The literal meaning is "to touch the strings"

Ps. 47:7; 57:7 68:4; 98:4; 144:9; 147:7; 149:3

 

SHABACK

To command. To triumph; to glory; to shout; address in a LOUD TONE; Ps 35:27; 63:3; 117:1; 145:4: Daniel 2:23; 4:34; 4:37 God sanctions this volume of praise. His majesty, glory makes Him a worthy God to be praised in this manner. Luke 2:13 and 9:37; Acts 2:46-47: 3:8:d Rev. 5:12 and 6:10

 

HALAL

To shine,to boast, to celebrate, to sing, to be clear, to rave, to be clamouriously foolish. Most common word for praise. Comes from Hallelujah (the Jah meaning Jehovah) 1 Chr. 23:5, 30: 119:30, 164, 175; 145:2; 149:3; 150:3-5; Joel 2:26

 

TEHILLAH

High praise; to sing and laud. Ex. 15:11; II Chr. 20:22; Ps. 35:28: 40:3 This word represents praise at its focal point before we enter into worship and God is enthroned in our midst. He inhabits our presence. Faith no longer is necessary in Tehillah because the presence of God replaces it. Healing takes place in Tehillah. Evangelism occurs when people see and experience the presence of God Repentance flows out of Tehillah praise
