What is Praise
Praise is our response
to God for his goodness towards us. The battle-cry of the ancient
Israelites was that "God is good and His mercy endures forever." As
the people chosen by God to be his own, they were privileged to know
by experience God's faithful provision to them. By honoring him with
praise, they were recognizing that he was their source and the One to
whom they owed full allegiance. Christians today have the glorious
responsibility to offer praise to God in a fuller understanding of our
eternal relationship with him in Christ.
God deserves our praise. It is
our privilege to give praise to God.
Oh, clap your hands, all ye
people.
Shout
unto God with a voice of triumph.
Lift up your hands in the Holy
Place.
Sing unto God, sing praises to
His Name
Kneel before the Lord our God
Praise the Lord with dancing.
Dancing has always been a part of celebration. Although dancing has
also been closely associated with sinful excesses, it has an important
place in praise.
Even today, bowing is used in
many cultures to show respect for a superior. Bowing is an outward
display of one's sense of inferiority towards and reliance on the
mercy of another. This is the right way to approach God.
It
may not be easily proven that running is a biblical form of worship.
Actually, running may be seen as a part of dancing. It is a
spontaneous response to joy and excitement. The man that was healed at
the Beautiful Gate of the temple "ran and leapt and praised God."
This mysterious manifestation of
the Holy Spirit is said by the apostle Paul to be useful as a form of
praise.
Standing in silent awe before
God is an appropriate form of worship. Many scriptures refer to
waiting on the Lord. This may be interpreted as listening for
revelation from God while in an attitude of worship and praise.
