Spiritual Gifts

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. (Romans 12:4-6a)

What is a Spiritual Gift?

Although the Bible does not come right out and define what a gift is, there is enough teaching on this subject to draw an adequate conclusion. The main references to spiritual gifts are found in 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, and Ephesians 4.

The following definition brings together some key truths from the Word of God:

A Spiritual Gift is a special divine empowerment
bestowed on each believer by the Holy Spirit to
accomplish a given ministry God's way according
to His grace and discernment to be used within
the context of the Body of Christ.

Examine each phrase for a better understanding:

  1. A spiritual gift is SPECIAL. When using a spiritual gift, you are going beyond the normal, expected Christian responsibilities. You are devoting more time and energy in a particular way of serving than those without the gift. You will usually see greater results. (See 1 Peter 4:10-11)

  2. A spiritual gift is of a DIVINE nature. It goes beyond natural talents, conditioning, or training. (See Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12:7-11)

  3. A spiritual gift is an EMPOWERMENT. Giftedness is the ability to serve, not where you serve. As such, a spiritual gift is not a position, office, or place of service. (See 1 Corinthians 12:4-6)

  4. A spiritual gift is BESTOWED ON EACH BELIEVER. Spiritual gifting is not gender or age based. There are no exemptions. If you are a true believer in the Lord Jesus, you have at least one gift. (See 1 Corinthians 12:7, 18; 1 Peter 4:10.)

  5. A spiritual gift is given to us BY THE HOLY SPIRIT. Neither you nor another human determines what gift(s) you have but rather the Holy Spirit. (See 1 Corinthians 12:7-11.)

  6. A spiritual gift is to be used TO ACCOMPLISH A GIVEN MINISTRY GOD'S WAY. God is diversified in ministry. The same gift may be given to different people in different variations and degrees and mixes so we will each be used in a unique way. (See 1 Corinthians 12:4-6; Romans 12:3.)

  7. A spiritual gift is given ACCORDING TO HIS GRACE AND DISCERNMENT. We cannot earn, achieve, or merit a spiritual gift. What we have been given is due to God's grace. One of the words for spiritual gift is "charisma," the root word being "charis" which means "grace." God gives the gifts in the right proportions as He deems best which means we do not have to feel envious or cheated. (See Romans 12:6; 1 Corinthians 12:11, 18.)

  8. A spiritual gift is TO BE USED IN THE CONTEXT OF THE BODY. In God's design, the gifts are to profit the Body of Christ, not merely the individual. By their very nature, spiritual gifts must have an affect on the Body. (See Ephesians 4:12; 1 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Peter 4:10)

When you operate within this definition, you will see the church grow as each member does his/her part (Eph. 4:16) according to the Holy Spirit's work following God's design and purpose.

The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts

A spiritual gift is a divine empowerment bestowed on each believer by the Holy Spirit to accomplish a given ministry God's way according to His grace and discernment . . . to be used in the context of the Body of Christ.

Numerous passages show the purpose of spiritual gifts to be the affect they have on the Body of Christ:

  • 1 Corinthians 12:7 - "Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good."

  • Ephesians 4:12 - "to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up"

  • 1 Peter 4:10 - "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others..."

As you can read in these references, spiritual gifts are not for my individual benefit or selfish gain. Rather, they are for the benefit of the body of Christ. When properly exercised, spiritual gifts will contribute to the overall health and growth of the church.

What is accomplished when spiritual gifts are used?

  1. Using our spiritual gifts builds up the Body of Christ. (Eph. 4:11-12; 1 Cor. 12:7; 1 Pet. 4:10; Rom. 1:11-12)

  2. Using our spiritual gifts makes us more effective. (Eph. 2:10; Rom. 12:3-8)

  3. Using our spiritual gifts deepens true fellowship and unity. (1 Cor. 12:12-13, 19-21, 25-27)

  4. Using our spirituals gifts glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor. 14:23-25; Eph. 4:11-16)

Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts

Discovering your spiritual gifts doesn't take a lot of detective work. You just need to know what to look for.

One of the best ways of discerning your spiritual gift(s) is to get involved in a variety of ministry experiences. As you explore the different ministry areas, you will soon discover if you are gifted for these ministries.
While labeling your gifts is helpful, using your gifts is more important. Do what you know to do even if you can't put a name to it.
